SYNOPSIS
Set along the French Riviera, the film follows Géo, a seven-year-old boy and leader of a gang of youngsters who spend the summer roaming freely and taking daring risks on the cliffs overlooking the sea. The arrival of a group of young “rivals” from the capital, and Géo’s encounter with the mysterious Eve, set in motion a merciless duel in which innocence and cruelty become indistinguishable—an unforgettable summer that will shape the protagonists forever.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Red Rocks is performed by seven-year-old children. These young characters embody an ordinary yet intense struggle between two rival gangs, rooted in opposing regional and social backgrounds, amid the flames of passionate, jealous love, clashes and perilous leaps. In doing so, they give form to the tumultuous forces of life and death that intersect and intertwine within human existence.
The setting—the dense, luminous and picturesque coast of southern France, on the ancient shores of the Mediterranean, defined by a stark contrast between red and blue—reflects the heat of the extreme actions and passions that stir and carry the hearts of those who struggle there.
The choice to place very young children within this magnificent landscape offers a uniquely poetic immersion in their own realm: the world of childhood and innocence, of timeless nature. It allows the film to evoke the universal omnipotence of the instincts and ideals of a human nature inclined towards conflict, in a place where grace and misfortune exist side by side.
The special effects must contribute spectacularly to making all the “adult” actions performed by the children—driving cars, speedboats and scooters, leaping from great heights and engaging in physical fights—cinematically believable. In this way, the effects will serve both the film’s vision and its embodiment, while facilitating and safeguarding the play of the children and young actors.
