WONDROUS IS THE SILENCE OF MY MASTER

Ivan Salatić

SYNOPSIS

In 19th-century Montenegro, tribes led by a poet and bishop named Morlak are engaged in a centuries-old struggle against a common enemy. When Morlak falls gravely ill, he sets out in search of a cure, leaving behind a war-ravaged homeland. Accompanied by his daughter and two loyal servants, he settles in an isolated house in southern Italy, hoping to find healing and peace.

Torn between duty and homesickness, his most devoted companion, Djuko, is consumed by a profound sense of longing, paranoia and fear. As he confronts the prospect of his master dying far from home—and grows increasingly jealous when Morlak becomes close to a visiting scholar—Djuko’s mind begins to unravel, pushing him to the limits of his endurance.

Djuko’s jealousy erupts into violence when Morlak’s return home brings his reign to an end.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES

In this film, I sought to offer an alternative perspective on Montenegro’s historical portrait, challenging the nineteenth-century views that continue to shape its cultural and political identity today. These views are often regarded as conservative and patriarchal, caught in a struggle to reconcile themselves with the modern world.

While historical figures and events inspired the film’s narrative, my aim was to create a work of fiction—a reimagined vision of the nineteenth-century Mediterranean.
