My Killer Buddy receives the award for Best First Work in the I(N)SOLITI IGNOTI - NUOVI PROTAGONISTI DEL CINEMA ITALIANO section at the Visioni Italiane Festival in Bologna.
Among the best first works released in 2023/2024, Gianluca Santoni's film was voted by a jury composed of Volunteers from Cinema Ritrovato, led by director Edoardo Gabriellini.
The Award consists in a print on film, offered by the Cineteca di Bologna.
Here is the motivation:
The jury expressed its preference for Santoni's film, the director's first work, for its ability to deal with a delicate topic such as domestic violence without necessarily resorting to the explicit, aligning the audience's gaze with that of a child, whose sensitivity and naivety open up a direct and sincere perspective on the topic.
My Killer Buddy by Gianluca Santoni is an intense and delicate story that explores the bond between two marginalized characters, addressing the theme of friendship in a difficult social context. With a sober and realistic style, the director manages to capture the humanity of the protagonists, bringing authentic and profound emotions to the screen. The essential photography and sincere performances make the film a work that touches emotional chords, leaving an indelible mark on the viewer.
The actor Andrea Lattanzi collected the award, thanking the jury as follows:
I don't know what to say other than, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I've been following this film far and wide for a year, seeing it paid off where we're going every time, is a source of pride for me. It's an award that I feel for everyone, for the entire crew, for Gianluca Santoni, who was a magnificent director and I hope that, for those who want to be actors, that you will be able to meet him and work with him, one day. Francesco, the child, who was phenomenal! Simply, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Io e il Secco continues to excite and conquer the public. The film is still in some theaters and on VOD, on Amazon Prime, Apple Tv+ and TimVision.
